Sometimes getting away isn’t about the most intrepid adventure and instead, it’s about slow travel. Going somewhere to relax, take a breath, enjoy nature and just get cosy. Well, if that’s what you’re looking for then Settle has to be on your list.
Settle, set deep in the Norfolk countryside, is a collection of three beautifully restored railway carriages, a stunning cabin and, in the summer, also home to luxury bell tents. I managed to find some late availability last autumn and we packed our bags, our books and a pack of cards and set off in search of a weekend of relaxation and switching off.
We had book Carriage No. 3 for our weekend and loved every single little detail, from the freshly picked posy of flowers, to the foldaway stairs and dining table. The space has been so thoughtfully put together, and every inch of space has been thought of.
And yes, they really are restored railway carriages! Except unlike the railway carriages you might be used to, each carriage at Settle has a wood burner, a cosy little seating area, a small but perfectly formed kitchen and a shower room.
Add to that, you can open the sliding doors and you’re sat on your own deck, where you can sit by your outdoor fire and read until your heart is content.
If you can pull yourself away from your peaceful cabin, make sure you head to the shop which has a stunning, curated collection of gifts (either for yourself or for someone else!) I’ve become a complete convert to the clay soap which is in the bathrooms, and is available in the shop, and I now won’t be without it at home.
The carriages are set around this beautiful pond, each set far enough apart to give each carriage its own privacy and sense of place. It also makes a stunning spot to watch out over in the evening.
I also adored these restored old postal bikes which are left at the shop for guests who want to have a little cycle.
It’s a self catering stay, and at Settle you’re given a wonderful breakfast basket of locally made bread, the most insane butter, fresh eggs, coffee and porridge. Perfect for rolling out of bed after an oh-so-wonderful sleep in your cosy carriage.
There’s something magical about Settle: there’s an air of peace, tranquility and, somehow, contentment. And even just 48 hours here was enough to give us a little reset before heading back into the city.
Sometimes, just taking the time for yourself and to enjoy a good book, a series of card games, a walk and maybe some wild swimming is the biggest luxury in the world.
I’d go back again in a heartbeat, either to stay in one of the other carriages or even their beautiful cabin.
