After our incredible stay at Gara Rock, we got back in the car still very much in our newly engaged bubble, and drove from Salcombe down to Mawgan Porth to check into The Scarlet, one of the UK’s most incredible and most romantic hotels!
Live
The Scarlet is renowned not only for its incredible views and its ayurvedic spa, but for its eco credentials and considering the environment at every turn. So not only is the pool treated with bromine rather than chlorine, but there’s no kettle in your room – but you can call reception at any time of the day or night if you would like a tea or a coffee.
But let’s take a little tour! As you walk into the hotel you’re immediately greeted with these incredible views out onto Mawgan Porth beach. Instead of a traditional hotel reception, it’s more like arriving in a beautiful living room – take a seat wherever you like and the friendly staff will come and sit with you and check you in. I loved that the staff noted that we had stayed before and welcomed us back. For me, with hotels, it’s so often the littlest things that make the biggest difference, and even this little touch made me feel so welcome and so happy to be back.
Sleep
After we had checked in, we popped into our “Just Right” room. Complete with an extremely comfy bed, little seating area, vanity desk and open plan bathroom, it was exactly as I remembered it from our last stay!
I love that all of the rooms are designed so that you can always see the incredible views out onto the beach! Wake up and jump out of bed, fling open the balcony doors and sip your morning coffee as you watch the waves lap on the beach. It’s essentially my definition of heaven. That, and sit on your balcony with a glass of champagne and some playing cards and toast to your very special trip!
I’ve honestly never found a hotel so calm, peaceful and restorative. I don’t know how they’ve managed to do it, but The Scarlet has bottled a sense of peace and understated luxury that I’ve rarely come across and they manage to sprinkle it throughout each room, restaurant and balcony. It was a perfect place to continue our engagement celebrations, but I can equally see it as a wonderful place to go with a close friend for a truly special weekend away.
But there’s one thing at The Scarlet that truly is exceptional…
You absolutely cannot top the spa at The Scarlet – particularly their cliff top hot tubs. I booked our hot tub slots at the same time I booked our stay to make sure that we had the sunset slots! Even as I write this I can still hear the waves crashing on the beach and see the incredible sunset. When we visited, because of restrictions the outdoor sauna wasn’t open – but if you’re lucky enough to visit and it’s open definitely don’t miss out on this!
Oh – and if you’re feeling brave, there’s an outdoor reed filtered pool that you can swim in too! But be warned, it’s not heated and so you may find it just a *little* bit chilly!
Not brave enough for the outdoor pool? Don’t panic, the indoor pool is just as beautiful and extremely peaceful. This stunning infinity pool makes you feel as if you’re swimming out into the sea (but you’re definitely a little toastier in this heated pool than in the sea!)
Eat
By this point, I hope you’ve realised just how special The Scarlet is and how much I love it… But if there was one more reason I could love it then it would be the incredible food. We booked the dinner inclusive package for our stay as we knew that we wouldn’t want to go out in the evenings. Well, that was definitely the right choice! I couldn’t fault a single dish that we had.
And when it comes to breakfast, you can either head down to the restaurant or you can order to your room. The breakfast menu changes daily and ranks as one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had, so make sure you’re nice and hungry as you’re going to want to eat the whole menu!
Think fresh juices, chorizo and scrambled eggs, smoked haddock and avo on toast, all served straight to your room with a hot cappuccino. Perfection.
A truly magical hotel and somewhere absolutely amazing to continue our engagement celebrations!
But I couldn’t leave you without showing you the view from the restaurant…
With full hearts, and feeling truly restored and calm, we packed up the car once more and headed on to our last stop of the trip!
